Ray “Motormouth” Guarino gives a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe a steering upgrade in this Autoseum video. Follow along as he removes the original steering components and installs a Borgeson power steering kit, new pump, and hoses.
The project uses Borgeson kit 999023, which is listed for 1965–1966 V8 Mustangs already equipped with power steering. Before starting a similar project, confirm the car’s existing steering setup and the kit’s fitment.
Removing the original steering box
Ray begins by removing the previous steering components. He takes off the pitman arm, removes the three bolts attaching the steering box to the frame, and lifts out the original box. With those parts out of the way, he bolts the new Borgeson steering box to the frame.
Connecting the steering linkage
Next, Ray installs the rag joint, which connects the steering column to the new steering box. He then attaches the pitman arm, center link, and tie rods.
These connections are central to how steering input reaches the front wheels. They need to be installed and checked according to the kit instructions before the Mustang is driven.
Trimming and reinstalling the steering column tube
The new steering box changes the space available at the base of the column. Ray removes the original steering column tube, measures it, and trims it to fit. He then reinstalls the tube and steering column.
Measuring before cutting is a key part of this step. The tube needs the correct clearance while the steering column and its connection to the box remain properly positioned.
Installing the pump and hoses
With the steering box and column in place, Ray removes the original power steering pump and installs the new Borgeson pump. He connects the new hoses and adds fresh power steering fluid.
After an installation like this, Borgeson’s instructions call for checking the system for leaks and bleeding trapped air from the power steering system. The company also recommends an alignment following the conversion.
